The story of Paolo, Open Access, Telecom Italia, who can be found thanks to his mobile phone and thus takes the well-known "train" that passes only a few times in a person's life: his first real chance for promotion in the company.

First day of my holidays, it was July and very hot.
In the first half of the nineties, mobile phones were still not very common, but I was an exception and I was on the beach at San Vicenzo showing off a brand new NEK P7, whose number was known only to a select few. Among these was naturally my mother and, luckily (I would add), my boss at the office.
The phone rang at about ten o'clock in the morning, and the amazed and almost amused looks of the other bathers made me feel a little embarrassed. "Paolo?", the boss's voice rang out. "Are you on holiday?" A strange question, given that it was he who had signed me off just two days ago. "Yes, I'm at the seaside...".
I was not destined to be there much longer: the now defunct Tuscany Regional Management had organised a training course for a new position which was shortly going to be created, and in his opinion I was the best-qualified candidate. He continued to apologise for disturbing me on holiday, but I couldn't see why: the fact that he had actually thought of me in spite of the many other choices that he had available gratified me greatly. As the conversation came to an end, I found myself standing at the water's edge a few hundred yards from the beach umbrella, without any recollection of having wandered off. If it had been just a year earlier, without this new technology, I would have missed what later turned out to be my first real chance for promotion in the company.
Destiny had willed it thus, and I had a growing sensation of that well-known "train" that passes only a few times in a person's life. Interrupting that holiday which I had just begun was not really painful. The people with me understood and did not object: it was the right thing to do. I would come back after a few weeks, fresh from the course and strong in the new role which I had in fact been given. The beach was the same, but the sea looked much bluer to me.
