Deutsche Telekom signs up as platinum member of Linux Foundation Networking

Un altro tassello della strategia Open Source di DT (hint: non si tratta di risparmiare ma di avere la flessibilità necessaria a rimanere competitivi come operatori nel software, in una rete che sarà sempre più SW based e che difficilmente i vendor integrati verticalmente riescono a dare).

 

As a platinum member, Deutsche Telekom now has a voting seat on the LFN governing board. The annual cost to be a platinum member of LNF is $250,000 with a two-year commitment. The Germany-based telco operator also joined the Linux Foundation at the silver level.
Deutsche Telekom is also a member of the Open Networking Foundation and a vocal proponent of Facebook's TIP. 
Deutsche Telekom has doubled down on its commitment to using open source by signing up as a platinum member of Linux Foundation Networking.
Earlier this year, the Linux Foundation put some of its open source communities, including the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP), under the Linux Foundation Networking (LFN) brand in order to foster cross-project collaboration. Mainly thanks to ONAP, the LNF projects currently enable close to 70% of all the world's global mobile subscribers. 
Deutsche Telekom isn't new to open source initiatives. In January, Klaus Martiny, senior program manager at Deutsche Telekom, was named as the first chair of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute's (ETSI) Zero touch network and Service Management Industry Specification Group (ZSM ISG.)
The provider is a vocal proponent of Facebook's Telecom Infra Project (TIP), which is co-chaired by Facebook and Deutsche Telekom. TIP's goal is to create a more decentralized approach to building and deploying infrastructure for telecom networks.
Deutsche Telekom is also a member of the Open Networking Foundation, which conducted a PON field trial earlier this year with ONAP, and one of the founding members of the O-RAN Alliance.
Garnering Deutsche Telekom as new member of ONAP will throw some additional weight behind ONAP's goal of creating a standardized orchestration and automation platform for the telecom industry. Deutsche Telekom plans on contributing to ONAP's next software release, which is called Casablanca.
In a blog post, Ashouriha said Deutsche Telekom would combine its work across ONAP and ETSI-ZSM to fully automate networks and service management.
"One thing is very clear to me: Intelligent and automated networks will be the critical success factor to leverage the full benefits of 5G, for our customers, both consumers and verticals. And we believe in joining forces with partners in the industry to bring in innovation and accelerate the path to this shared future," he wrote in the blog.
Aside of ONAP, other open source communities that are hosted by LNF include FD.io, OpenDaylight, OPNFV, SNAS.io, Tungsten Fabric and PNDA.
ZSM ISG had more than 40 members when it was announced in January. LNF currently has over 100 members.

Google has become a Platinum member of The Linux Foundation, and captured a board seat at the foundation in the process.
Sarah Novotny, the head of open source strategy for Google Cloud Platform, will join The Linux Foundation Board of Directors as Google’s representative.
“Google is one of the biggest contributors to and supporters of open source in the world, and we are thrilled that they have decided to increase their involvement in The Linux Foundation,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director, The Linux Foundation. “We are honored that Sarah Novotny, one of the leading figures in the open source community, will join our board – she will be a tremendous asset.”
“Open source is an essential part of Google’s culture, and we’ve long recognized the potential of open ecosystems to grow quickly, be more resilient and adaptable in the face of change, and create better software” said Sarah Novotny, head of open source strategy, Google Cloud. “The Linux Foundation is a fixture in the open source community. By working closely with the organization, we can better engage with the community-at-large and continue to build a more inclusive ecosystem where everyone can benefit.”
Some of The Linux Foundation open source communities Google supports include Cloud Foundry, Node.js and the Open API Initiative.
Google was also a founding member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), having created and open sourced CNCF’s popular Kubernetes container orchestration platform, and is a founding member of the Core Infrastructure Initiative, which takes a proactive approach to securing some of the more important software technologies in the world, and the TODO Group, which collaborates on practices, tools, and other ways to run successful and effective open source projects and programs. Moreover, Google has been a leader in Software Defined Networking and other open source networking projects.

In the latest National Rail Passenger satisfaction survey, just 30% of respondents said they were satisfied with onboard Wi-Fi – in fact, passenger satisfaction with toilet facilities was ranked higher. 
On trains, there are potentially hundreds of users trying to access Wi-Fi at the same time -- all connected to one mast, which can’t provide the required capacity. 5G technology could help to fix this issue, but infrastructure groundwork is required first, including laying fibre along the tracks, mounting wireless devices on masts and providing power for masts.

“We are intensifying our joint research with Huawei in the area of intelligent connected vehicles,” explained Saad Metz, executive vice president of Audi China, adding: “Our aim is to improve safety and optimise traffic flows in order to create intelligent cities. The concepts will be concentrated initially on the Chinese market.”

Telcos Still in R&D Shadows as Spending Falls

Telcos are taking back control, as a Brexiteer might say. Upset that a few unelected equipment vendors in Europe and China dictate the rules of the technology game, they are voting for change. Groups like ONAP, the Telecom Infra Project and the recently formed Open RAN Alliance (ORAN Alliance) are proof the R&D balance of power is shifting back toward the operators.
"In the past all of the innovation was done by operators. Then it was given to the vendors. Now it is coming back a bit," said Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, the CEO of Deutsche Telekom's towers subsidiary and the German incumbent's former chief technology officer.

German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland will transmit selected live sports coverage from streaming portal DAZN via satellite for Sky sports bars in Germany and Austria.
As part of the three-year collaboration, Sky will offer two linear DAZN channels in HD quality on Astra (19.2° East).   Background: Sky and DAZN will share the Champions League rights from the 2018/19 season; DAZN is the sole owner of the Europa League rights.

The TV market in Western Europe was worth €99.4 billion at the end of 2016, accounting for an annual growth rate of 1.8 per cent. This compares to a 17.5 per cent growth over the period 2006-2016, at an average annual rate (CAGR) of over 1 per cent.
These are the key conclusions of the 15th edition of the annual report Turning Digital: The Future of Streaming Content published by Rome-based ITMedia Consulting.  However, the growth was uneven across countries, due to the deep disparities between the national markets in Europe. Advertising remains the leading force in the TV market, with a positive growth in the last two years (+2.6 per cent on 2015), reaching €32.7 billion. The Internet segment accounted for almost half of total advertising spending in 2016. The pay-TV market grew by 2.5 per cent in 2016, to €45.1 million thanks partly to IPTV, which registered a 66 per cent growth in the period 2011-2016, to the detriment of cable TV which has been in decline since 2010.
The report also highlights the fact that new ways of video consumption are expanding beyond the single screen and streaming and mobile services represent the main drivers of this change. Another new trend is the live online offer of sports.

Engineers at University of Michigan have created a computer that could stand on the tip of a grain of rice.
The university on Thursday said its engineers have produced a computer that's 0.3 mm x 0.3 mm -- it would be dwarfed by a grain of rice. While it drew comparisons to IBM's own 1mm x 1mm computer, Michigan's team said the creation is about more than just size.
"We are about 10x smaller so we can fit in smaller spaces," David Blaauw, a professor co-leading the project, said in an email statement. "Also, the IBM computer can't sense its environment -- it can send a code identifying itself but it does not sense its physical environment."
The success of tiny computing opens doors for researches in other fields. You can use the little devices for pressure-sensing inside the eye, cancer studies, oil reservoir monitoring, biochemical process monitoring, tiny snail studies and more, according to University of Michigan.
"We're using the temperature sensor to investigate variations in temperature within a tumor versus normal tissue and if we can use changes in temperature to determine success or failure of therapy.

 
 

Navion computer chip makes nanodrones smarter

Researchers at MIT, who in 2017 designed a tiny computer chip called “Navion” to help honeybee-sized drones navigate, have now shrunk the chip design even further, both in size and power consumption. Navion is just 20 square millimeters in size and consumes just 24 milliwatts of power. However, the Navion chip is still able to process in real-time camera images at up to 171 frames per second, as well as inertial measurements, both of which it uses to determine where it is in space.
The researchers say Navion can be integrated into nanodrones to help them navigate, particularly in remote or inaccessible places where GPS data is unavailable. The chip design can also be run on any small robot or device that needs to navigate over long stretches of time on a limited power supply.
