Research and innovation in TIM are oriented towards Smart Services, those services that oversee the energy efficiency and digital services of the city.
In modern cities one of the first issues to address is transport. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) use technology that enables vehicles to communicate with other vehicles, with street signs and with infrastructures along the road, as well as with other road users. "Connected Vehicles" (cars, lorries, buses, etc.) hence become part of a fully connected hybrid communication system, which includes smart road infrastructure, distributed sensors and private and public control centres. These systems have strong potential to improve road safety and the efficiency of road transport.
In addition to promoting the “smart cities” model by providing citizens with a series of innovative digital services, Smart Services also help to enable new forms of collaboration between citizens and public authorities: we're talking about Smart Communities.
The data collected by TIM’s mobile network is of great use to businesses, public administration and citizens, thanks to advanced analytics, which are applied to the presence and flows of people across the country.
The use of Big Data can be applied to tourism, for example, to plan and manage crowds of visitors, people's movements during events, and tourist itineraries.
The URBeLOG (URBan Electronic LOGistics) project is also geared towards the Smart City; it is funded by MIUR (Ministry for Education, University and Scientific Research) and in addition to TIM, involves Iveco, TNT and the Temporary Association of Companies (ATI). The project deals with the distribution of goods over the “last mile” and seeks to propose new process methods and an open and integrated ICT environment of reference that allows all stakeholders to interact efficiently and minimize environmental impact.
The public service for vehicle emergency calls to a single emergency number E112 (eCall) has become operational in all EU member states for all new models of cars registered and produced from March 2018; these vehicles must be natively equipped with a mobile network modem capable of automatically calling the emergency number in the event of an accident.
The pilot phases are co-financed by the European project HeERO; on the mobile and fixed network, TIM manages the technology by providing calls marked with an e_Call flag in the areas identified for testing.
The following projects are funded by the European Union:
·         MOBiNET (Europe-Wide Platform for Connected Mobility), to develop a distributed pre-operational framework at EU level (using cloud technology), which can support an open ITS market to offer data (content) and new services (applications) by interfacing with legacy infrastructures and solutions.
·         AUTOPILOT (AUTOmated driving Progressed by Internet Of Things, IoT), to develop IoT platforms and architecture to support automated driving by integrating the knowledge and technologies of the automotive industry and IoT.
