In April 2011 Telecom Italia launched a new low environmental impact product line, marked with the “Telecom Italia Green” logo. This initiative is in line with TI’s Green Procurement policy that was issued in 2009 and sets the general objectives for continuous improvement in the purchasing process.

The first “Telecom Italia Green” product is the new ADSL Home Access Gateway aimed at both business and private customers. The choice was driven by the consideration that over one million units are expected to be sold this year; therefore even a slight improvement may produce a significant environmental impact reduction across the entire life cycle of the product.

Eco design principles have been applied to both product design and manufacturing:

  • the shell is made of just three parts compared with 11 in the previous model, and the amount of plastic used for manufacturing has been reduced as well:  the new modem weighs just 170 grams, 60% less than its predecessor that weighed 460 grams. This represents an improvement in both economic and environmental terms, since the number of operations in the manufacturing process is reduced and the lifetime of the product can be increased since maintenance and reconditioning will be easier;
  • the material used for the shell is a polycarbonate-ABS blend which exhibits excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance and is highly recyclable (almost like pure ABS, that can be recycled up to 100%);
  • the disassembly time has been shortened by halving the number of screw fixings: it takes now 70% less time than for  the previous model;
  • the package is made of non plasticized cardboard which is 100% recyclable. For future products recycled cardboard will be used;
  • the number of plastic bags for the items included in the package has been minimized; it was not possible to eliminate them completely due to process constraints, but the material used is recyclable up to 7 times.

The new Access Gateway is compliant with version 4 of the European Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment that has been signed also by Telecom Italia (for further information access the link on the right), and consumes 40% less power than its previous version. If we consider one million units in operation, this means saving 20,000 tons CO2 emissions, equivalent to not using more than 11,000 cars for one year or planting 30,000 trees. The product is also compliant with “off mode” power consumption requirements set by the European Commission Regulation n. 1275/2008 implementing Directive 2005/32/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council with regard to eco-design requirements for standby and off mode electric power consumption of electrical and electronic household and office equipment, that shall enter into force in 2014. Finally the product is equipped with a highly energy efficient power supply (higher than 77.85%).

The access gateway can be easily reconditioned for re-use by simply updating its firmware or replacing either its plastic parts if broken or worn or the printed circuit board if not functioning.

A specific Environmental Declaration, that is included in the product package, has been developed in order to communicate the environmental performance of the product to our customers and to raise their awareness on the importance of adopting a responsible approach to the management of environmental impacts.

More products, designed with similar criteria, will be launched in the near future.
