Telecom Italia, an increasingly eco-sustainable company

Telecom Italia is an increasingly eco-sustainable company in which technological innovation is combined with environmental protection and energy efficiency.

This is attested by the recognition received on 10 April 2014 for the White Certificates (EECs – Energy Efficiency Certificates), relating to its energy efficiency achieved in its Data Centres with the Next Generation Data Centre (NGDC) project developed three years ago.

In 2012 Telecom Italia started the energy efficiency certification process and in this three-year period it has constantly monitored the activities for requesting the Energy Certificates to benefit the investment projects, with significant impacts on energy efficiency itself.

Specifically, thanks to the NGDC project – the first one ever in terms of energy efficiency in the ICT sector – 552 latest generation highly energy-efficient servers have become virtual, and 7,225 now obsolete servers have been decommissioned, optimizing the space in the Data Centres; in terms of energy efficiency it means a saving of around 55 GWh per year, equal to 10,200 TOEs.

A decisive factor for GSE certification is the presentation of a highly innovative “consumption model”, certified by specific international studies and sample monitored using the Ti-Green energy management platform in the Smart Centre.

White Certificates were established with a Ministerial Decree in July 2004 and they were issued by GSE (Italian Energy Services Manager) to enhance innovative projects that involve significant savings of electricity or fuel. Each white certificate corresponds to a TOE (Tonne of Oil Equivalent) saved.
To obtain certification it is not only necessary to create a mathematical formula capable of appraising energy saving, but also to prepare a system to monitor energy consumption before the intervention and for the 5 subsequent years.
