The EXPO 2015 project is an integral part of TIM’s commitment to creating shared value for business and society.

The development of social and economic well-being must include the modernisation of the country and technology is the tool by which to simplify and improve the life of residents and businesses. TIM acted as Official Global Partner for Expo 2015 and, more specifically, Integrated Connectivity & Services Partner, with a pivotal role in implementing and managing all the Information & Communication Technology infrastructure.

The partnership saw the great support offered by TIM in the development of a sustainable, intelligent city - the first smart city of the future, of which the exhibition site was an example, play a leading role, and it provided the opportunity to try out and make available its excellences to the event and community, highlighting TIM’s innovative positioning.

The digital engagement proposed by the universal exhibition was also an essential opportunity to sensitise the educational system and propose innovative systems for the management of knowledge.

This is why TIM has not only developed the website dedicated to the School Project but has collaborated right from the start, participating in the development of the experimental initiative intended for the schools of Monza during the school year 2013-2014, which involved more than 120 classes.

For the national phase of the School Project (school year 2014-2015), TIM has made a new evolved digital environment available to teachers, the Scuolabook platform, to allow for the comparison, sharing and collaborative production of contents relating to EXPO 2015.

Under the scope of the initiatives linked to the Expo world, TIM, in collaboration with USR Lombardy, promoted the pilot Social Reading project for the school year 2014-2015, in support of collaborative learning, which involved 100 classes; TIM has made the participatory and collaborative Scuolabook Network teaching system available to the comprehensive institutes of Milan, Varese and Pavia.

TIM acknowledges a pivotal role played by the Mobile world in engaging Visitors: this is why it has developed a series of applications for Expo in support of its strategy and the most important events in preparation for the exhibition:

  • smart app prototype, to test the visitor’s user experience during the 6 months of the universal exhibition
  • IPM 2013 application during the International Participants Meeting
  • augmented reality application of the Padiglione Italia model
  • Expo+ (in collaboration with Nuvolaverde and Accademia+) mobile application for the increase of the pavilions of Expo Milan 2015 in terms of the sustainability solutions, with the aim of aggregating and spreading the thought and practices of excellence and helping create a cultural leadership of sustainability.

The strong social value of the two themed portals is also worthy of note, also made available in a Mobile Application version:

  • Expo World Recipes “Le Ricette del Mondo Che vengono dal Mondo” (Recipes of the World that come from the World) dedicated to the world of recipes and food, structured as a large repository of original recipes from across the globe, an important digital legacy of the Expo. The initiative is the expression of the values of Expo 2015, able to exalt and convey the values of multi-ethnic and cultural participation, connected with all participants.
World Recipes has made available almost 330,000 recipes (more than 70% of which are international) from almost 7,000 sources, covering the culinary traditions of 148 different countries.
  • Exponet, the digital magazine with a journalistic, international flavour, for the spread of awareness of the major theme of Expo Feeding the planet, energy for life, and how this is connected with the lifestyle of people, through the cultural, technological, ecological, economic prints that food leaves on the culture and lifestyle of people.
More than 2000 articles, 600 interviews, 500 photographs and 400 videos produced have been published in the Exponet magazine.

In support of its positioning, TIM has developed a series of communication projects for the dissemination of the event and involvement of the community:

  • Belvedere project with its drones over Expo during the pre-opening period
  • Almost 250 events in the on-site spaces and in the Milan Triennale building, with more than 20,000 people involved and more than 200 visits by Business clients to Expo and the Command and Control Centre
  • Development of digital islands of Milan Municipality
  • Showcase LTE Broadcast on TIM Vision contents and closing ceremony in collaboration with RAI

TIM has optimised the partnership also in the Consumer area, developing a proposal dedicated to the event, with an additional data/voice bundle with respect to the basic offer available in association with Expo actions, in particular the sale of the Expo ticket, of which TIM was a reseller, using innovative technologies such as NFC.  TIM was also present in Expo with a sales area and two corners covering the entire exhibition site and developed a territorial cover plan for the entire duration of the event.

TIM has created the first “tablet and internet sharing” ICT solution developed in Europe.  The TIM2go service has responded to the paradigm of collaborative consumption, enabling visitors to use a tablet for rent, for a certain cost, but without the “burden” of ownership and without any concern for accessory costs, erosion of data traffic, roaming, theft or loss. In complete respect for privacy, it allowed not only the device to be shared, but also the 4G/LTE connectivity of the pre-loaded applications and a complete audio-photo-video-cloud entertainment experience, enriching and simplifying the visiting experience to Expo and travel in Italy.

TIM contributed to EXPO 2015, operating as an enabler of social well-being of tomorrow: the ultrabroadband network infrastructure, the spread of latest generation services and the operative management of the event EXPO 2015 for the governance of all the partners involved with the technological Control Room, produced social benefits for both the business world and visitors.

FOR THE CITIES

TIM for Expo offered its technology in support of the first sustainable smart city, as a concrete example of digital transformation and innovation of services for increasingly sustainable living.

FOR THE RESIDENTS

TIM for Expo used the best connectivity and access technologies to allow use of the services offered and the real time sharing of the visiting experience.

FOR THE COUNTRY

TIM for EXPO has proven to be a great leading business that, thanks to its innovative technology and the know-how of its resources, is taking Italy towards the threshold of complete digitisation.

TIM aims to accompany the country through its modernisation, a route through which technology is the tool used to simplify and improve the life of residents and businesses; it has always played, and indeed continues to do so, a forefront role in the construction and development of our country’s future.

The partnership involved support provided by TIM to developing a sustainable and smart city – the first Smart City of the future – of which the exhibition site was an example.

TIM acted as Official Global Partner for Expo 2015 and, more specifically, Integrated Connectivity & Services Partner, with a pivotal role in implementing and managing all the Information & Communication Technology infrastructure.

As part of the Expo 2015 project, TIM installed fixed network, mobile and IT infrastructure, supplied cutting edge technological solutions, including mobile payment and mobile ticketing solutions and smart solutions for visitors and public administration bodies, developing and managing the web portal, managing operations and maintaining and supplying connectivity and traffic services relating to telephony and data.

TIM’s contribution towards Expo 2015 also took the form of: 100 interactive totem poles, installed on the Cardo and Decumanus, managed by means of the TIM management platform, which enriched the visit to the exhibition site, allowing a large number of Wi-Fi access points to operate, granting visitors to the universal exhibition free access to the internet; the Command and Control Centre (EC3), a sort of “director’s room” outside the exhibition site, which ensured, with the assistance of the police forces, the operative management of the EXPO 2015 event; a new application for monitoring large flows of people arriving from the city of Milan to the exhibition site and vice versa, based on the anonymised data of the TIM SIMs, correlated with other sources of information made available by the E015 site (Trains, Aeroplanes, Car parks, motorway traffic, etc.) and the information published by visitors on the various social networks; the Cyber Security EXPO project that has led to the design and activation of centralised monitoring platforms and the definition of management and escalation processes for IT security incidents; the sponsorship of the Padiglione Italia, making the best technologies and infrastructures available to the national pavilion and developing the app and dedicated site “Digital Grand Tour” to facilitate the digital experience of visitors; the Extended Expo project, stemming from the desire of TIM and Expo 2015 to extend the “best practices” in terms of innovative IT solutions developed for Expo Milan 2015 and the countries taking part in the Universal Exhibition, to the whole of national territory.

Extended Expo

Extended Expo is a collaborative project by TIM and EXPO 2015, looking to extend the innovative IT ‘best practices’ developed in conjunction with Expo Milano 2015 and its participating countries to the whole national territory. Over 500 contracts have been signed, with both public and private companies, for a grand total of 7-million euros, across the whole of Italy.

Extended Expo is part of Telecom Italia’s agenda to foster shared value across business and society through digitalisation.

The 500+ companies participating to Extended Expo have benefitted from the use of an innovative tool (mobile app, web portal or digital signage solution) to access the Smart City world, and generate better visibility for their services and products aimed at end-customers.
