It is called Biosite and it is a metal pole containing a Radio Base Station. What is it for? It improves data transmission quality. It can also be used for public lighting and video surveillance.
This multifunctional structure was developed and patented entirely by TIM Brasil and offers a number of benefits:
- minimal visual impact
- 12 times faster to install than conventional solutions (3 hours on average for installation)
- low cost
- low electricity consumption
- low environmental impact because it uses 99% less steel than a normal base station.
- space-saving
Five people from TIM Brasil were involved in the design, prototyping, testing and type-approval stages of Biosite's creation.
The first Biosites were installed in Brazil in 2014 and today there are more than 500 in over 90 Brazilian cities, with the prospect of topping 1500 in 2019:

Nowadays there are too many aerials and this is a global problem. This problem has been exacerbated in Brazilian cities due to the rapid increase in population, which has resulted in clusters of aerials appearing on roofs, the fronts of buildings and metal structures.
The idea of the Biosite stems from the need to bring all these together within one simple yet innovative structure. Using a conventional solution would take up more space, with higher impact from both an architectural and energy consumption viewpoint.
The Biosite could be used for various telemetry and detection purposes in the future, with corresponding sensor-based functions, for example the measurement of pollution levels in cities.
