Fabio Nieder

Born in 1957 in Trieste, Fabio Nieder is composer, pianist and conductor with German and Italian nationality.

He was a precocious talent and trained at the Conservatory in Trieste, where he studied composition, piano and chamber music with, respectively, Giulio Viozzi, Roberto Repini, Dario De Rosa and Libero Lana (from the Trio di Trieste). He studied composition further with Witold Lutoslawski.

He developed his musical talent in the Mittel-European culture, particularly within the genre of German Lied. As a pianist, he collaborated several times with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Petre Munteanu and frequently accompanied such acclaimed Lied interpreters as Alfredo Kraus, Petre Munteanu, Barbara Hannigan and many others.

Fabio Nieder is founder, conductor and pianist of the contemporary music ensemble "Florestan-Eusebius", which gave its début in 1983 at the Musikprotokoll Festival in Graz. He has conducted several outstanding contemporary music ensembles, one of the most important being the Amsterdam-based Nieuw Ensemble, which performs many of his works.

His encounter with Luciano Berio in Salzburg in 1997 led to an intense artistic relationship, which later became a deep and sincere friendship.

Fabio Nieder teaches composition at conservatories in Amsterdam and Trieste and several other European academies (e.g. Stuttgart, Tallin, Graz and Ljubljana).

He composes works for such renowned ensembles and orchestras as Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Recherche, Nieuw Ensemble, Atlas Ensemble, Ives Ensemble, ÖENM, Orchestra Nazionale della RAI, WDR, SWR and SR in Germany.

Many famous musicians have interpreted his works including Heinrich Schiff, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Barbara Hannigan, Teodoro Anzellotti, Eduard Brunner, Ed Spanjaard, Emilio Pomàrico and Myung-Whun Chung.

His compositions have been performed at major festivals and concert halls, such as the Berliner Festwochen, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, Musik der Jahrhunderte (Stuttgart), Musik im 21. Jahrhundert (Saarbrücken), Wien Modern, Musikprotokoll (Graz), Holland Festival, Output-Festival (Amsterdam), Huddersfield Festival (UK), Biennale of Venice, Milano Musica, Nuova Consonanza (Rome), Festival Présences (Paris), Berliner Philharmonie, Theaterhaus Stuttgart, Tonhalle Zürich, Wiener Konzerthaus, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw aan't IJ Amsterdam, Teatro alla Scala (Milan) and Teatro La Fenice (Venice).
