British American mezzo-soprano Andrea Baker studied singing at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York with Jan Degaetani, and privately with Blanche Thebom. She was a Metropolitan Opera Competition National finalist and began her stage career with the San Francisco Opera in Die Walküre conducted by Donald Runnicles. Described   as possessing   a  “luscious   and   full-bodied tone”,  Andrea  Baker is renowned  for her distinctive  voice,  intense  artistry,  and passion. Her extensive repertoire includes the title role in Carmen, Amneris in Aida, Azucena in Il Torvatore, Herodias in Salome, The Composer in Ariadne, Venus in Tannhäuser, Fricka in Die Walküre and Das Rheingold, Erda in Das Rheingold and Siegfried, Waltraute, 1st Norn and 2nd Norn in Götterdämmerung, Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde, Ortrud in Lohengrin, Kostelnika in Jenufa, Serena in Porgy and Bess, Mescaline in Le Grand Macabre, Mrs. Grose in The Turn of the Screw, Sophie in Die Legende des Heiligen Elizabeth, Baba the Turk in The Rakes Progress, and she created the role of  Nen-Nen in the world premiere of The Bird of Night. Her performances of Serena in Porgy and Bess at the 2010 Edinburgh International Festival have been unanimously hailed as a major success. The Independent of London wrote:  “Andrea Baker’s Serena was the undoubted star of the show, her coppery, Mahlerian Mezzo charged with intensity”.

Her collaborations with conductors include, Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle, Donald Runnicles, Richard Hickox, Antonio Pappano, Philippe Auguin, Valery Gergiev, Marin Alsop, Adam Fischer, and Sir Charles Mackerras. Operatic and Concert engagements have led her to many of the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls, they include: Sydney Opera House,  The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, Tokyo Opera City, Finnish National Opera, Palau de les Arts, Valencia,  Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich, Peking Arts Festival, Beijing, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf, Aix en Provence Festival, Salzburger Festspielhaus, Salzburg , Edinburgh International Festival, Teatro del Maggio Musicale, Florence, San Francisco Opera,  Cité de la Musique, Paris, Berlin Philharmonie, Royal Albert Hall, London, BBC Proms, Orchestra Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Rome, Konzerthaus, Berlin  and The Barbican, London.

In addition to operatic engagements she appears frequently as a concert soloist. Her repertoire includes the Verdi Requiem, Händel’s Messiah, the Symphonies of Beethoven, Hartmann, and Bernstein, Sir Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio, Sir Michael Tippet’s A Child of Our Times, and Wagner’s Wesendonk Lieder. Ms. Baker has extensively performed Mahler’s symphonic works including Kindertotenlieder and Symphony No. 2 at the Berlin Philharmonie, Das Lied Von Der Erde with the pianist Cyprien Katsaris, and Mahler’s 3rd Symphony with Marc Piollet and Phillip Auguin..

Highlights of her upcoming engagements include:  Begbick in The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (Hamar) for the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, and Staatstheater Bremen, Ortrud in Lohengrin for the Deutsches National Theater Weimar, and Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Die Amme in Die Frau Ohne Schatten for the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden (Hamar), and Mahler’s Das Lied von Der Erde with the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker.
