Pictures from the East is a collection of six short impromptus, very evocative, inspired by the texts of the German orientalist Friedrich Rückert.

Robert and Clara Schumann had eight children.

Fantasiestücke for clarinet op. 73

Hausmusik

The Fantasiestücke op.73 are a perfect example of "Hausmusik" (domestic music), compositions intended for private use, to enliven the Schumann family's evenings. This custom was an integral part of German musical life.

Clarinet

The clarinet is a single-reed wind instrument belonging to the woodwind family. The oldest ancestor of the clarinet is the Egyptian memet, consisting of a pair of pipes and known since 2700 BC. The Italian example worth noting is the “LAUNEDDAS”, a musical instrument featuring three pipes, developed in Sardinia in the first millennium BC and still forming part of the popular tradition.

Quartet for piano and strings op. 47

1842

In 1842 Schumann experienced a creative explosion in the composition of chamber music. In that year he wrote the three String Quartets op. 41, the Quintet op. 44, the Piano Quartet op. 47 and the Fantasiestücke op. 88.

Schumann in the cinema

The composer's troubled life has inspired many film directors over the years: this is recorded on his website by a pianist and scholar of cinema who mentions the film Träumerei (1944, made by the German director Harald Braun), Song of Love (1947, by Clarence Brown, which can be seen in its entirety on the internet) with Katharine Hepburn as Clara Wieck, and the more recent Frühlingssinfonie (1983, by Peter Schamoni) with Nastassja Kinski and Herbert Grönemeyer.
