Luigi Cherubini

Luigi Cherubini

In 1839, Luigi Cherubini, who was almost 80 years old, was a famous composer and teacher, as he was the director of the Paris Conservatory. Therefore, his name was first on the list of illustrious figures in the world of European music to be elected as honorary members of the Congregazione and Accademia di Santa Cecilia that Gaspare Spontini had proposed to the secretary Luigi Rossi.
During the meeting on 15 January 1839, all proposed names were accepted immediately and without exception. Cherubini appreciated the nomination, as can be seen in his handwritten letter to Secretary Rossi; however, his advanced age did not permit him to further develop his relationship with the Accademia.
In the following years, Secretary Rossi used Cherubini's name anyway to bring prestige to the Academy by citing him as one of its most important honorary and effective members.
