Energy management

Think Green, Act Smart

How does a large company behave with sustainable energy? The importance of thinking big, without forgetting the details.

How many of us remember to switch off our ADSL modem after using it?
Have you ever wondered how much a small modem consumes, in terms of energy efficiency? It may seem like something small, but these domestic "details" impact on global warming.
To give you an idea, 14 million Italian families have an ADSL modem at home, and the amount of carbon dioxide produced by items like these equals to the pollution generated by a medium-size car that travels around the Earth 9 times! If this is the impact of a small item within a single family, we can only imagine the impact of a large company on the environment and consumption.
But it is not just a matter of responsibility and "duties": environmental protection is one of the most important challenges that a company on a global level will face from here on in. It is for this Telecom Italia truly believes that technology and connectivity can and should play a decisive role in this path of constant improvement, and this path must begin first of all within the company.
Sustainability is built with facts, not with words.
Telecom Italia accounts for 1% of the annual consumption of energy in Italy. In other words, it consumes as much as all the families of Milan put together.
As a company, we know very well to limit consumption and manage the energy we have, this is only the first step. It is our duty to experiment, to find new solutions that allow us to improve, both in large structural projects and small "office" habits with the help and cooperation of our employees.
Talking about sustainability is not enough. The need to "do it", and do it on all levels, as explained by our MD Marco Patuano:
"Telecom Italia is doing a lot to become a more green company, with facts and not merely with projects or promises. The commitment to review our processes and the entire company with a green vision, when we purchase, use or design new services. "
The Smart Center: technology at the service of sustainability.
When each of us is committed to behaving more efficient in our own homes, eliminating waste and bad habits that affect energy consumption, the first thing we learn to do is to keep everything under control.
Telecom Italia has designed and developed the Smart Center specifically for this this goal: it is a cutting-edge technology center on the outskirts of Rome, thanks to 24,300 sensors that are physically located within centers, homes, offices, shops and laboratories, in the national territory Telecom Italia constantly monitors energy management, to identify the behaviors to be corrected and to propose new energy saving solutions.
The data analyzed at the Smart Center generates ideas and concrete proposals that are applied within the Group. For example, air conditioning systems in buildings, management of lighting systems, good habits in the office; if managed properly and with common sense - on a large scale helps to improve the environmental impact of the entire company!
Think big, don’t forget the details.
Our effort to reduce the environmental impact also goes for the products that end up in the homes of consumers.
Telecom Italia has developed with its suppliers, a line of "Green" products in order to reduce the impact on global warming: the ADSL Green line modem allows savings of at least 40% in respect to the previous generation, based on the same use.
Lastly, these items should go into standby automatically when we forget to turn them off, which helps individual families to do their part in saving energy ... also saving on stress!
