If you are in some way part of the great IoT - Internet of Things - world, this article may interest you. Our IoT Open Lab is a laboratory for
  • collecting
  • guiding
  • developing
  • and testing solutions for the Internet of Things
An "innovation centre" which uses the environment and technologies of TIM’s commercial and pre-commercial networks, including the very recent  Narrowband IoT technology based on the evolution of the 4G network.

Ecosystem enabler and Business Accelerator
The Lab is open to all players in the IoT ecosystem:
  • device manufacturers,
  • service companies,
  • research centres,
  • local administrations and institutions,
  • businesses,
so that they can offer their customers or citizens the IoT solutions made economically sustainable by our narrowband-IoT technology.
With our Open Lab we make it easier to take advantage of the new business prospects presented by the Internet of Things, reducing the complexity of development, supporting time-to-market, partnerships for new sales channels and income opportunities, in an ecosystem logic.

The services: training, testing, development and trials
Training activities
The Lab is a qualified place for training your staff: in addition to cutting-edge technologies, here you will also find our experts with specialist skills who are up-to-date on the latest IoT innovations, thanks to the active presence of TIM in the international context of this sector.

Testing activities
In the Lab you will find:
  • a workstation for testing NB-IoT radio coverage, with a console that allows you to adjust the level of the signal received so as to reproduce the behaviour of the receiver in different conditions (outdoor, indoor or even deep indoor);
  • an IT platform (ICON) in the cloud environment on the public network, with access via REST protocols, for the collection and processing of data;
  • availability of NB-IoT SIMs.
The laboratory is therefore suited to all your IoT devices, as long as they are equipped with radio connection modules, from 2G to LTE as well as other radio technologies, such as Wireless MBus at 169 Mhz.
To carry out the underground NB-IoT radio tests it is preferable for the device to be fitted with an easily accessible connector for an external antenna. If it is not, with the support of our staff, you can carry out the test by positioning your device in a shield box (dimensions approx. 25x25x25 cm) – there is a picture of one at the end of this article. 

Development activities
The Lab is also the right place if you are thinking about specific development activities for end-to-end solutions, for example providing particular smart services. Here you will be able to:
  • use the dedicated laboratory work station,
  • bring your developers on-site - embedded programming skills for IoT devices will be required,
  • use the APIs in the cloud which we make available to you with the ICON platform - which our developers will illustrate to you.
Opportunities for collaboration at both technical and commercial level may also arise.
Trial activities  
If you want to test your services or devices in the field and you already have interesting prospects in specific geographical areas, you can carry out all the testing activities in the Lab, even jointly, making contact with our commercial departments and those of Olivetti.

Finally, here you will find different opportunities for testing preliminary and prototype IoT solutions, on the entire End-to-End chain, from radio components to platform and application components.
