What can I do with the Cloud?

It's there but you can't see it

For many of us the Cloud remains a mystery: in reality we use Cloud services on a daily basis … it's just that we don't know it!
For example, when we send an email via the web or if we use Google to search for something.
Instead of using the memory of our PC we exploit the space available in the memory of a server located who knows where. This allows us to use these services all the time and in complete mobility.

Companies and people

These are just some examples, the Cloud is much more.
Instead of managing our online services from home, more and more companies are choosing solutions that host sites, services and applications in the Cloud.
The advantages are:
· security
· affordability
· rapid access
· simpler updates

Individuals also trust in the Cloud to file and "securely" store their personal content, for example photos, videos and music, as well as documents and emails.

Cloud: infrastructure…

If we need infrastructure, that is the Data Centre and servers, we can have it in the Cloud.
With Data Space by TIM data is stored in the Cloud so you can work with flexibility wherever you are. It's a solution highly suited to smart working too, a method that is becoming widespread.

Nuvola IT Self Data Center can be used to independently set up a personal virtual data centre, which can be accessed from the web with any device. It is incredibly useful for increasing or reducing one's computational capacities in a flexible way, for example if there are peaks or drops in activity, and for ongoing accounting, e-commerce, and warehouse management. On these occasions companies may need to equip themselves with more (or fewer) virtual servers without wasting time choosing and ordering new servers.

...platforms…

In addition to hardware, which we have spoken about so far, the Cloud offers an applications platform and a series of features, such as authentication services or communication between services.
An example of this is  TIM Open, the platform dedicated to developers and start-ups. Based on automation, simplicity and scalability, TIM Open allows you to concentrate on the creation of innovative business applications thanks to the tools available on the platform.

...Software…

To complete the picture we must talk about the possibility of having software and applications in the cloud.
Nuvola IT Urban Security offers Public Administrations and companies services for the monitoring and safety of cities and citizens.
Another Cloud software is Nuvola IT Comunicazione integrata, which provides voice, video, messaging and collaboration services.
So we can all sit down around the same virtual table, there are Nuvola IT IntoucHD video communication services: meetings via video represent a solution taken up by companies to lower costs and increase productivity.

The situation in Italy

In 2016 the Cloud market in Italy reached 1.7 billion euros, with an 18% increase on 2015.
According to the Cloud &ICT as a Service Observatory (*), in Italy the most innovative sectors in terms of cloud computing are manufacturing (23% of the total expenditure) and banking (21%), followed by Telco and Media (14%) and services (10%).
Despite the data recording growth, Italian companies only make "partial" use of the Cloud, for some specific activities or non-core areas. They often come to the Cloud because the time has come to renew their technologies or infrastructure agreement.

To the Cloud and beyond

In the beginning, there were servers: companies had many servers for their various activities, which they managed paying very high costs.
With the shift to virtualisation many virtual machines (or virtual servers) have been created on one single server capable of hosting different operating systems.
Today, with the Cloud we can even get rid of most servers and host everything on the Cloud, with the advantages that we mentioned above.
What's the next step? The Cloud Federation, or the Cloud of Clouds, namely a system that allows two or more independent clouds located in different places to share documents as well as authentication and calculation resources, and much more besides.
In the ’60s John McCarthy said: "in the future the power of calculation will be a public asset, on a par with drinking water and gas."
Cloud Computing today, based on the digital transformation of companies and the Digital Life of citizens, seems to be moving in the very direction indicated by the US computer scientist, who in 1955 coined the term "artificial intelligence."
