The JOL WAVE (Wireless Applications in multi-deVice Ecosystems), situated in the Cittadella Universitaria di Catania scientific campus, focuses on the future of mobile services and devices.

Thanks to the partnership between Telecom Italia and the University of Catania, the campus has become a real Open Living Lab, where the innovative services of the WAVE lab are experimented exploiting the main next-generation technological enablers (Long Term Evolution, Mobile Cloud and Software Defined Network).

To better understand what it does, we asked Valeria D’Amico, Manager of the Telecom Italia Joint Open Lab WAVE.

JOL WAVE

In the lab, we design and create innovative mobile apps based on versatile software development platforms, exploiting the hardware potential offered by a large number of connected devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets, wearable devices, sensors, actuators, smart objects, video cameras, interactive screens etc.) while analysing new scenarios of use for users and establishing the most promising related business models.

With this in mind, thanks to a multidisciplinary approach, the integration of technological and economic aspects is considered a key element to gaining a comprehensive view of the complex process of creating and managing innovative state-of-the-art products and services.

To achieve all this, Joint Open Lab WAVE projects are based on three key enablers, creating different service concepts at the ideal intersection of three important technological pillars: Connected Devices, Mobile UltraBroadBand (4G Long Term Evolution and its future developments) and Mobile Cloud.
