JOL SKIL (The Semantics and Knowledge Innovation Lab) brings together the knowledge of the University of Trento with the expertise of Telecom Italia.

It is a competence centre for developing innovative techniques to analyse huge amounts of data in collaboration with the University of Trento.

To better understand what happens at JOL SKIL, we spoke to Fabrizio Antonelli Head of the JOL in Trento and winner of the Premio Innovation Under 35 Italia 2014.

Fabrizio Antonelli was selected as the winner thanks to the project he is developing at the Telecom Italia Joint Open Lab SKIL. His research involves the CitySensing project, an example of using advanced analysis of Big Data (especially telephone network and social network data) to monitor events.

The winner was declared on 12 May in Bologna by Professor Romano Prodi, President of the MIT Technology Review Italia Scientific Committee.

The SKIL lab focuses on developing technologies for the automatic analysis of huge amounts of data known as Big Data. One of the major initiatives is the CitySensing Project, which aims to automatically process anonymised data flows from the Telecom Italia network and from external sources in order to identify evidence and trends in urban areas regarding the mobility of people, tourist distribution patterns in cities of art, participation at events, etc.

Another important project, developed in collaboration with MIT Human Dynamics Group and Telefonica, is the Mobile Territorial Lab, which, with the continuous involvement of a large community of young families in the Trentino region, aims to develop solutions based on personal data collected via smartphones, specifically focusing on advanced management technologies for the privacy of data.
