Senior Telecom ALATEL Venice in collaboration with the Cultural Association Liciniana, invites you to the conference "CHARACTERS OF TIZIANO AND PICASSO SEEN BY A TODAY PORTRAIT PAINTER.

Maestro Giovanni Cavazzon is the promoter of this conference which provides the audience with an interpretation of the portraits from a particular point of view, that of a portraitist.
The purpose of his words is to remove misunderstandings about the meaning of the portrait, often reduced to a mere finding of physiognomy. Through the "reading" of some of the portraits of two great performers, he starts towards understanding of psychological and aesthetic investigation of the works, up to put in direct relation works only apparently different as self-portraits by Titian (1565) and Picasso (1965 ), or portraits of Ranuccio Farnese (1541) and Maja (1938).
"A portrait, like any good biography, tells us about the person, their availability to the world, its aspirations and also his social status, the family environment, the role that society has assigned to. The psychological portraits (those that go beyond the physiognomic aspect) should be read carefully: a look, a bitter twist, a thoughtfulness disarming, defiant, hairstyle, an accessory, they tell us much, and most of the character of the person. "(from:" Re / traits "by Giorgio Belledi, theater director). Cavazzon Giovanni is a master of this art, as evidenced by his extensive work as a portraitist, of which there was also an exhibition at Castello Sforzesco in Milan (2007).

TIME ZERO Was there ever a beginning to the Universe?
For over a century we have been aware of an expanding universe: galaxies grow apart at very high speed a little like the shards after an explosion. Since 1998 we have also been aware of the acceleration of the expansion. Let us imagine showing a movie backwards, that is going back in time: if we could do it, we would see a very small universe until about 13.7 billion years ago it converged in a point no greater than an atom. It is what physicists call its initial singularity, at least this is what the Big Bang theory suggests. However is this initial singularity realistic? Can we hypothesize a point like object with infinite density and temperature? Logically there is something unconvincing in this cosmological model when we push it to the point of Time Zero. This is why research is increasingly active focussing on the very first moments of our Universe. The solution of the problem could be paradoxical and could be summarized in the questions: are we sure that the Universe ever had an Time Zero?

GENERATING WEALTH Why do you Need Research, Legality and Meritocracy for Growth
Recent OECD data place Italy 21st in the world for public funding of research and 22nd for private funding. Spain is just ahead of us and Hungary follows. Data are not encouraging. Good research is useful to skilled business people, and along with a credible political class these are the ingredients of the appeal for investors, The question is whether we will be able to start the virtuous circle up again. A number of factors make up the success and wealth of a country soon we will be voting and these elections hold great expectations. The general impression is that we need a new political class, unlike the one which we have learnt to know for its privileges, costs and corruption. The new political class would be the only one able to make a miracle, that is to say to bring Italy back on track to economic growth and to the wellbeing of advanced nations. However, this is only part of the problem, and possibly more of a consequence that a prime cause. It's not enough to change the majority party or its leader. We have to switch the engines that run an country and make it competitive back on: scientific and technological research which are the basis of the 'wealth generating machine'. However the cultural and educational context also has to be appropriate and up to the challenge.

THE NEUROBIOLOGY OF MARIJUANA Therapy and Social Risk
In English the word drug can translate into Italian either as farmaco (pharmacological treatment) or droga (illegal substance). In any case active principles are known to be either a drug or a poison according to dosage. In the past quarter of a century the understanding and status of Cannabis (aka Marijuana or Indian Hemp) has undergone major changes. Thus the introduction of varieties which grow under artificial light able to synthesise the active principle, delta-9-tetra-hydrocannabinol (THC) at concentrations at least ten fold the ones obtained from endemic species, mean it is more powerful in the central actions and in determining long term effects and addiction. It generates tolerance that is to say one needs to increase doses to obtain the required effect. Hence the psychological addiction which leads to a greater use in spite of the fact marijuana can interfere with normal activities and damage health. However marijuana has also been put forward as a treatment for a number of conditions leading to a strong debate. Recent knowledge has radically changed the status of cannabis and of its derivatives both in terms of its therapeutic applications and in the social perception of the risk associated to its spread and use.

A TROJAN HORSE TO FIGHT CANCER Cunning Solutions in the Fight against Cancer
The aim of the research group at the Oncology Department of the University of Turin is to understand the mechanisms whereby a cancer cell can resist chemotherapy rejecting the drug which is trying to penetrate it. The cells appears to be an impregnable city, a little like Troy when under siege of the Achaeans. However, the cancer cell has its weak points just like anything else, for instance its metabolic needs differ from another cell's. It is key to understand what it is hungry for and offer it a chemotherapy wrapped up as a tempting molecule, which is like using the same technique Ulysses employed when he built the Trojan horse. The use of Trojan chemotherapy may improve response to treatment in the more resistant cancers.

JUST ROUND THE CORNER: AFTER THE CRISIS New Problems and Opportunities
What lies just round the corner from the crisis? New problems but also new opportunities. To talk about it first of all we must list the causes that led us to the present state, what mistakes, lack of attention or omissions were committed. Then we can talk about ourselves, of Piedmont and Italy in the context of a global and European economic and social scenario. If we compare ourselves to the rest we can see that we are not in a overly bad position, in fact we do quite well on a world stage. Of course we should not neglect critical issues, such as an ageing population, youth unemployment, the need to renew the public sector, re-launching the economy through research and innovation. We have to complete the puzzle of choices, developing solutions tailored to a complex world, which is why the work by two scholars, Al Roth and Lloyd Shapeley who were awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize for Economics, was so important: they addressed issues such as how to match demand and supply, resources and jobs even in the most difficult cases.

WHEN EYES SPEAK The Gaze in Social Life
'The eyes are the mirror of the soul', 'expressive eyes', 'a blank look' are sayings and adages that speak of the importance our eyes are in expressing our feelings. Recent psychological studies offer a scientific explanation to the common sense underlying this knowledge. There is more to it: by looking at another person one can understand what they are interested in and what they would like. Sometimes, just by following someone's gaze we can guess what they want or what they are going to say. This skill, that is mind reading through the eyes, is not just due to how we represent ourselves or other minds but also shape the objects others interact with . In fact objects acquire new properties in another person's gaze, properties they would not have if not looked at. Our behaviour changes when we operate under someone's gaze: the mere presence of two eyes, even if barely sketched, can make us more altruistic and generous. Just like Medusa's, other people's gazes seem to hold the power to change what they are looking at.

THERE IS A LOT TO DISCOVER A visit to science lab of the future
The Twentieth Century was marked by the discovery of relativity and atomic energy, of the DNA double helix, the Moon landing, space explorations, Internet and the spread of IT. We have understood we are the children of the stars because the chemical elements we are made of were synthesised in the stars and in the supernova explosions. Who would have thought so? What is there left to discover?
According to astro-physicist Giovanni Bignami the next few years will offer sensational new discoveries which will change our vision of the world, of space and of life itself. We may learn how our brains work, what is that 96% of dark matter (thus called precisely because we don't understand it) and we may learn something about in 2062 when Halley's comet will once again come around revealing the existence of other life forms in the universe. Open challenges and in many cases we lack the questions, let alone the answers.
Bignami will guide us along the narrow and fascinating boundary between science and imagination, following an itinerary which will take us from the centre of the Earth to outer space, proving humans have just taken the first steps into the exploration of the world, the cosmos and of themselves.
