ALEX'S ADVENTURES IN NUMBERLAND

Venturing into the Human and Chimpanzee Mathematical Brains
in cooperation with the Peano Prize of the Associazione Subalpina Mathesis
Alex Bellos spent a year travelling round the world to discover how and why we count. In this amusing and enlightening conversation he will tell us about his experience with an Amazon tribe that only conceives three numbers (one, two , many) and will recall his meeting with e fasted human calculator in the world whom he met in Japan. He will then describe the most 'mathematically minded chimpanzees in the worlds and the abacus champions whose deeds in mental calculations are truly amazing and spectacular. Humans, like chimpanzees, have an understanding of numbers which is more surprising and interesting than could be thought. He was awarded the 2011 Peano Prize for the best book of mathematical popularization and will receive it from Franco Pastrone, President of the Associazione Subalpina Mathesis before the conference.

AMAZING MATHS
When games become shrewd challenges: a journey through time and thought

Games are a preferential path to maths and to discover it is also a game, in fact the most wonderful of games ever to be invented, in the words of many mathematicians. Underlying the calculations and the formulae is Logic, even more important. This is why games are such a precious commodity. As Leibniz put it, he favoured logical games because [maths] "is more thoroughly displayed in games" (paraissant mieux dans les jeux) "than in the most serious pursuits". Games are the starting point to reacquire the real dimension of maths, which is necessary to overcome the block and loathing many people have for numbers. They see maths as a mere 'technique', that is to say a tool to solve problems such as mechanics or economics, while maths is as beautiful as a poem or any other work of art. One must highlight its cultural value and see to it that no one ever says: 'I never understood maths nor did I ever like it'.

The collection seeks to call in the game research, memory, voltage, around the singular change that our country has experienced in the last 50 years, in the field of mental health, retracing the thickness of the words that have written this story, the contention of the meanings which crossed them, the escape routes that prevented or made it possible

Colonel), a songwriter (Gasparini) a painter (Spinazzi), a designer (Pratt), a director (Jodorowsky), a Navajo (Mitchell), a musician (Gasparoni), and a character that was all that and more (Verdet), and, for each of them, he matched a glimpse of known and unknown views of Venice .
