Gian Paolo Balboni

Gian Paolo Balboni was born in Vercelli (Italy) in 1957, and graduated in Physics Laude and honors (summa cum laude) in 1981, at the “Politecnico di Torino” (Polytechnic University of Turin).
He has then spent over 30 years in Telecom Italia, mostly focusing on R&D projects.
Since 1995 onwards he has been leading a number of Research Groups, aimed at managing technical areas such as: digital switching systems, multiprocessor architectures, parallel computing, VLSI for telecommunications, packet switching networks, ATM switching systems, broadband networks, multimedia technologies and services, digital media.
For ten years he has also served as a Professor at the “Politecnico di Torino”, presenting Telecommunications courses.
From 2002 to 2006 he has been working as a Senior Program Manager for the deployment of new Digital Media services, including DTT, IPTV and DVB-H. Since 2006, he has been in charge of monitoring the ICT industry trends, from a new perspective coping with strategic innovation.
He is currently Head of Trends within the Strategy Direction of Telecom Italia, devoted to track techno-economic trends and cross-industry new business opportunities.
Mr. Balboni has also published tens of technical papers concerning parallel computing, VLSI for telecommunications, broadband switching systems, multimedia technologies, digital media. He co-authored two books "Sportello tecnologico per le reti ad alta velocità" (1992), "DTT e servizi interattivi" (2005). (i.e. "ATM technology for high-speed networks" (1992) , “DTT and interactive services” (2005).
