History
6 December 1964: the CSELT (Centro Studi e Laboratori Telecomunicazioni – Telecommunications Research Centre and Laboratories), the STET and Group company research centre in the technical and TLC field, was set up in Turin.
In the early 1960s, the CSELT conducted studies and experiments to produce monochromatic light from crystals or rare gas utilising optical beams as vehicles.
In 1975 Musa, the first artificial voice system able to speak and sing, was created.
The first mobile network was started in the mid-1980s; it was a 450MHz analogue network.
The first result was in 1989 with the definition of MPEG-1, the standard for the memorisation, processing, delivery and display of audiovisual flows.
In 1995 Telecom Italia, represented by the CSELT, joined the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
In the mid-1990s, with VIP Library, the Research Centre developed and implemented the concept of "virtual silicon", Intellectual Property with high systems-based content, designed to be programmed and configured.
This is the Project Torino2000 dating from 1997- 1998, which started trials on streaming for contents on the ADSL access network with various types of coding, including MPEG-2.
Security in networks and services
Biometric recognition was started in 2002, and in 2004 SIM-Secure was developed.
Equipment and system management
From 2002 up to now, the Innovation Centre has been active in the commissioning of the new management network for broadband networks and the development of a number of other management support systems.
