2000s

2001 - GPRS offers are introduced. The first 150 telephone exchanges open with unbundled access contracts.

2002 - Inauguration of wireless broadband with Wi-Fi technology. 
TIM introduces MMS, multimedia messages to send and receive images, text and music.

2003 - Mobile TV starts. The service, launched by TIM, the first in the world, uses the GPRS network.
Wi-Fi in public places and WLAN service on mobile network become available.

2004 - Introduction of the video telephone for fixed telephony. The UMTS system is activated allowing for the simultaneous transmission of photo, video and text during a conversation.
TIM presents EDGE (evolution of the GPRS), broadband mobile network for high-speed data transmission.

2005 - TV via Internet is tested in 21 Italian cities. “Alice Home TV” is the name of the new TV via Internet (IPTV).

2006 - European Wireless Broadband, or WI-BRO, network trial begins as does that of mobile digital TV in DVB-H technology. The first hydrogen-powered telephone exchanges are created.
With the name “Alice tutto incluso”, Telecom Italia launches double and triple play offers, as well as the “Alice Messenger” service.

The “TIM I’M” service, the “smart” diary installed on new mobile phones, which facilitates communication with registered users, time after time, utilising instant messaging, mail, SMS, MMS, video phone calls.

2007 - With the startup of ”Ultra-broadband mobile”, it is possible to surf the Internet on a mobile phone at a rate of more than 7 Megabytes.
Telecom Italia’s next generation broadband development project (NGN2) starts in Milan with progressive coverage nationwide.

2008 - “Mobile payment” solutions are conceived, the mobile phone as a credit card, and systems of telemonitoring via mobile network are tested in the healthcare field.

2009 - Solar panels are used to cover the energy requirements of a radio mobile station in L’Aquila.
Milan is the first city in the world with mobile ultra-broadband service with a download speed of 28 Megabit/s and an upload speed of 5.8.
World trial of the LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology conducted in Turin, the mobile ultra-broadband “4G” network has a speed of up to 140 Mbit/s.
