Frequently Asked Questions

1)  How to register a team?
To register a team, the team leader needs to register at this page and compile the registration form, entering the names and email addresses of the team members on the box field provided in the form. It is not necessary for other team members to register separately.

2)  Is it necessary that each of the team members register themselves to the challenge?
No. It is sufficient that the team leader list the names and email addresses of all the team members upon registering to the challenge.

3)  What should I fill in the “Team or Company name” field in case I am an individual participant (e.g. Students with no formal affiliation to any team / organization / company)?
In case of individual participation compile the “Team or Company name” field with “None”.

4) Is it possible to add or remove a member from the team after the registration?
No. In the case of incorrect or inconsistent team data please contact us at a bigdatachallenge@telecomitalia.it

5)  Can I participate in more than one team?
Yes. There is no restriction with regard to team exclusivity in the regulation.

6)  Can I participate in more than one track at a time?
No. It is only possible to submit a project idea in a single track.

7) Can each team members have his/her own credential to access the reserved area?
No. The single credential to access the reserved area for a team, which can be used by all the team members, is provided to the team leader.

8)   Can I use the data outside of the scope of Telecom Italia Big Data Challenge?
No. The data can only be used to participate to the Telecom Italia Big Data Challenge. Further usage is allowed only for the publication of scientific articles even after the end of the contest, citing the source of the data  “Source of the Dataset: TIM Big Data Challenge 2015, www.telecomitalia.com/bigdatachallenge”.

9)  How is the licensing of the data contained in the dataset?
The license associated with each data in the dataset is described in the detail page of each data.

10)  Is it possible to use open source software in the development of my idea?
Yes. The regulation of the challenge does not impose any constraint on the technology used in the development of project ideas.

11) Can I use external data or data not contained in the dataset to develop my idea?
Yes. The regulation of the challenge does not impose any constraint on the use of external data (e.g. open data) in the development of project ideas.                                                                                                                                                                                                  
12)  Is it necessary to use all the data in the dataset for the development of my idea?
No. Each participant is free to choose any part of the dataset to be used. The criteria for proposal evaluation are available at this page.

13)  I have registered but I have not received any mail with my access credential, what should I do?

Please check that the confirmation mail with the access credential has not been mistakenly filtered to your SPAM folder. Otherwise, in case you still have not received any mail within 24 hours after the registration, please kindly contact us at bigdatachallenge@telecomitalia.it.

14) Can I change the data inserted during the registration?

Not yet, unfortunately. We are adding this feature and you will find it in the DASHBOARD tab in the private area. You can then modify your data until the upload of your idea.

15) Can I submit an idea in an early development status (e.g. concept, prototype)?

Yes. The regulations of the Telecom Italia Big Data Challenge do not put any constraint on the maturity of the development for the submitted ideas. You can find the evaluation criteria on this page.
