FBK (Fondazione Bruno Kessler)

Fondazione Bruno Kessler is a non-profit research institution of public interest, established by the Autonomous Province of Trento. It conducts research in the areas of Information Technology, Materials and Microsystems, Theoretical Physics, Mathematics, Social Sciences (in particular, in the evaluation of public policies), Italian-German Historical Studies and Religious Studies. Its mission is the exploration of innovative frontiers of knowledge and the recognition of the value of creating new knowledge. Hence stems its attention for the development of new applications, which is the result of a systematic intellectual, creative and multidisciplinary work addressing non-consolidated research areas as well.

Human Dynamics Lab dei Media Lab del MIT

The Human Dynamics Lab at the MIT Media Laboratories pioneered the idea of a society enabled by Big Data.   The Lab has developed technologies such as reality mining, which uses mobile phone data to extract patterns that predict future human behavior, a `nervous system’ framework for dramatically more efficient transportation, health, energy, and financial systems, the New Deal on Data policies which are now enshrined in the US Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights, and a Trust Network communication architecture that ensures that this new data driven society is secure and  fair.

MOBS LAB - Northeastern University 

The MoBS laboratory is home to research projects aiming at developing innovative mathematical models and computational tools to better understand, anticipate and control large-scale complex networks and systems. The laboratory, directed by Alessandro Vespignani, has joint affiliations with the Department of Physics, the Department of Health Sciences and the College of Computer and Information Sciences at Northeastern University.

Politecnico di Milano

The Politecnico di Milano is ranked as one of the most outstanding European universities in Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design, and in many disciplines is regarded as a leading research institution worldwide. Big Data Challenge is mainly supported by the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioinformatics (DEIB) that hosts the ICT research of Politecnico di Milano. DEIB is one of the major university departments in Europe, both for its size and for the quality of its research. DEIB's mission is to improve constantly the scientific and technological knowledge in the fields of Systems and Control, Computer Science and Engineering, Telecommunications, and Electronics with a special emphasis on application of bioinformatics. Data and Information Management Group - Università di Trento

dbTrento is the Data and Information Management Group of the department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI), at the University of Trento. It  is active in the areas related to the management and analysis of massive data and metadata. It designs and develops management systems for different types of data (relational, XML, time series, streaming, sensor, business process data, and others), and is exploring techniques for efficiently storing, querying, and analysing these data. It is also working on problems related to information integration and metadata management, and are building tools for schema and ontology mapping, interoperability, data translation, and information integration.  All the above are done with massive data (i.e., Big Data) in mind. The produced research finds applications in the areas of business intelligence and business process management, data warehousing, sensor networks, metadata management systems, social and semantic web, intranet information systems, and others.
