Higher connection speed option for 85% of currently available ADSL lines will allow websurfers to view high-quality Rosso Alice broadband content on their home PCs.

At these speeds, an entire musical compilation can be downloaded in just over a minute.

From March 31, Telecom Italia is raising Internet connection speeds to 4Mb per second in its latest flat-rate package. Eighty-five percent of currently available ADSL connections will be able to take advantage of this ‘superfast’ link for a grandstand view of the latest broadband content.

Offering always-on bandwidth at up to 4 Mbps downstream and 256 Kbps upstream, “Alice 4 Mega” gives a significant boost to home PC broadband access performance and makes broadband content more enjoyable and more appealing. This kind of bandwidth adds higher definition visuals and better quality sound to live events streamed on the web. The average time it takes to download an entire musical compilation falls to just over a minute, while instant messaging and e-mail management become truly instant.

The Alice 4 Mega offer brings a new dimension to the on demand content available on Telecom Italia’s ADSL portal Rosso Alice, which may be accessed by all Italian websurfers who have a broadband connection.

A deal between Telecom Italia and the Italian MTV channel allows music fans to watch live streamed events, get a backstage pass to concerts by top Italian and international artists, find out about the latest news, features and facts, and browse the MTV musical back catalogue.

The Rosso Alice Sport channel is also being enhanced. A brand new sailing section makes its debut alongside the football, basketball, volleyball and other sports content. Rosso Alice is offering exclusive computer access to Luna Rossa in its preparation for the America’s Cup. Starting in June, highlights of preliminary races will be available on demand, alongside major news updates, interviews and highlights, in the run-up to live coverage of the America’s Cup 2007 finals.

Alice 4 Mega is available to residential customers at a cost of €39.95 per month. The package includes a number of free bundled services: sending up to 10 text messages per day, setting up a personal web site, organizing an online photo album, a 100MB mailbox, and e-mail antivirus and antispam facilities. For just €2 per month, the “Alice Security” option offers a new centralized antivirus and firewall which is constantly updated online, allowing customers to surf, work and play online on their home PC without worrying about unauthorized access and attacks.

A brand new service soon to be rolled out, “Alice Gigamail”, will allow all Alice ADSL customers to send and receive ‘heavyweight’ e-mails of up to 2GB.

One year after its launch, in February 2005 Rosso Alice registered 2,080,000 thousand unique browsers (who visited the site at least once), and a total of 43,506,000 pageviews (an average of 1,554,000 each day).

Telecom Italia registered Europe’s highest broadband growth rate in 2004. By the end of the year the company supplied 4,010,000 residential broadband connections (twice the figure at the end of 2003). This year the company plans to extend broadband coverage to 90% of the Italian population.
