Telecom Italia Wireline, the Telecom Italia business unit dedicated to Fixed Telephony and Enterprise Internet Services, and Cisco Systems, the world leader in Internet networking solutions, announce the creation of a new broadband "voice/video/data" infrastructure with IP (internet Protocol) technology. This second fixed network generation will allow for the full development of broad band in Italy.

Telecom Italia Wireline already relies on Europe´s largest broadband network, also one of the of widest networks in the world. This allows the company to offer broadband access at an increasing speed and quality to both businesses and homes. Through the agreement with Cisco Systems, Telecom Italia Wireline intends to leverage its technological assets and further enhance its strategy in order to develop its new service and application network offer addressed to the business market, while also to further value broadband "voice/video/data" services for the residential market on a large scale.

Telecom Italia Wireline will implement the new Cisco "Optical Packet Backbone" with Cisco technology based on 32 big POP (Point Of Presence) distributed across the whole national territory and interconnected through high speed optical network DWDM. The network will support broadband "voice/data/video" services with IP technology and will provide the necessary support in order to satisfy every requirement of IP transport on broadband. This network infrastructure will allow for the implementation of new VoiP services also thanks to Italtel, a company in which both Cisco and Telecom Italia participate and leader in voice traffic control technology. The new services will also be available for residential customers and will be implemented across the national fixed telephony network.
