Telecom Italia: Premium-rate service call barring rollout begins tomorrow

Telecom Italia starts gradually rolling out nationwide permanent barring of fixed-line phone calls to so-called premium-rated services and numbers that may pose a potential threat to customers tomorrow. Offering customers an additional method of keeping their phone bills in check, the initiative will be completed by October 1, pursuant to Communications Authority requirements.
The service is being automatically activated free of charge on all Telecom Italia customer lines that at the present time do not have any of the company’s call barring services already activated on the line. The bar affects calls to:
- Numbers beginning 144, 166, 482, 483, 484 and 899 (485xy numbers, used for fundraising by non-profit organizations, are excluded from the bar);
- Numbers beginning 163 and 164 (excluding calls that are rated at a per-call price of up to one euro including VAT, which are used for TV votes and charity fundraising);
- Numbers beginning 892 (excluding those that are used for subscriber news services, public information services, or customer/consumer assistance services);
- 412, 41412, 444 and 448 numbers;
- International and satellite numbers costing more than 35 eurocents on answer and/or three eurocents per second (including VAT).

A full list of numbers to which the bar is being applied may be viewed on the http://www.187.it/ and http://www.191.it/ web sites. This list of numbers may be amended to reflect Communications Authority instructions.

The automatic call bar is being rolled out across Italy as follows:
September 15: Piedmont, Valle D’Aosta and Lombardy;
September 17: Veneto, Trentino Alto Adige and Friuli Venezia Giulia;
September 22: The Marches, Umbria and Emilia Romagna;
September 24: Tuscany, Liguria, Latium, Abruzzo, Molise and Sardinia;
September 30: Apulia, Campania, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily.

Customers who would like the automatic call bar lifted may restore outgoing calls to these numbers on request at any time by calling “187” (residential customers) or “191” (business customers), free of charge.
No permanent bar will be applied to customers who are already using any of the company’s current PIN-protected barring services. PIN-protected selective call barring allows customers to choose which types of numbers they wish to bar or allow. Telecom Italia would like to remind customers that for technical reasons it is only possible to have one type of call barring active on any individual phone line.
For more detailed information on the various types of barring available, customers may call the new toll-free number 4.81.81, or visit our http://www.187.it/ and http://www.191.it/ websites.
