La7 2008/2009

The TV station that cares about making good TV

LA7 unveils its brand new autumn season, and confirms its position as a top player in Italian TV and culture.
LA7 continues to build on its success. In the last six months, LA7 achieved impressive viewing figures and an ever-increasing audience, registering a 3.1% daylong share (3.3% in June 2008, a record for the network). LA7 increased its pool of viewers throughout the day, and achieved the greatest progress during prime time – a solid platform indeed on which to invest for the future.
Operating in a highly competitive and rapidly-evolving marketplace, LA7 is pursuing growth by appealing to an increasingly broad potential public. In order to achieve this, LA7 is becoming an increasingly welcoming and accommodating destination for viewers. True to its DNA, the network is rolling out new programming and new presenters, while at the same time building on the values that have always distinguished it from the competition: the values of pluralism, diversity of opinion, creativity and the ethics of its network presenters – all qualities that have enabled the network to grow year-on-year.
LA7’s development strategy involves reviewing all of the company’s structures to achieve greater synergies with Group platforms. Enhanced productivity and closer cost control are necessary to make LA7 a competitive, market-oriented enterprise.
LA7’s new schedule brings back the network’s flagship shows, core principles and overarching philosophy. LA7 is dedicated to serious yet entertaining TV; LA7 is all about covering events in Italy and worldwide, offering an opportunity for people with insight, rather than mere characters, a home on Italian TV.
News has always been a key component of LA7’s output, not just through news bulletins but through current affairs shows such as Omnibus, which this autumn will be expanding to cover all of the news, lifestyle stories and politics that matter, rapidly and accurately, as our viewers have come to expect.
The new season’s shows revolve around the pillars that have made LA7 the authoritative, high profile network it is. Gad Lerner is back with L’Infedele; Daria Bignardi returns with Le Invasioni Barbariche; Maurizio Crozza hosts Crozza Italia Live; Ilaria D’Amico fronts Exit; Antonello Piroso returns with Niente di Personale; there’s also Otto e Mezzo, and Marco Paolini brings his special brand of civic theatre to LA7.
LA7 will also be forging an exciting new editorial path, with Marco Berry presenting Vivo per Miracolo, Valerio Massimo Manfredi hosting the new popular history show Impero, a new documentary on Kenneth Foster (LA7 was the first network to support him in his battle against the death penalty). Recount is a cult feature film starring Kevin Spacey, which will air during a themed day of programming dedicated to the presidential elections in the US, complete with specials and live broadcasts from the LA7 news team.
That’s not all. Simone Annichiarico, son of actors Walter Chiari and Alida Chelli, makes his debut in La Valigia dei Sogni; we are showing Malpelo with Alessandro Sortino; the Città Criminali series; instant movies with Istantanea by Roberto Burchielli and Mauro Parissone, introduced by Rula Jebreal’s interviews, and of course new episodes from top TV series Stargate and The L-Word.
LA7’s sports coverage is one again spearheaded by rugby, with the 2009 Six Nations tournament, and Superbike racing. The network has long taken an original approach to these disciplines, not just popularizing them but creating a formidable number of new fans. Football, of course, has a starring role to play on LA7. After the extraordinary viewing figures achieved last season, the UEFA Cup is back to light up Italy’s night-time TV viewing with the tournament’s final phase: this year, some of Italy’s top clubs are in this competition.
As part of a major telecommunications conglomerate, LA7 has a head start on the latest technological developments. In 2008, the http://www.la7.it/ website enjoyed constant growth, reaching 480,000 unique users and around 4 million pageviews (monthly data from Nielsen). The number of people who signed up to the site community leapt by 50%.
More generally speaking, Telecom Italia Media and LA7 are driving synergies of content for the Group’s various platforms through increased integration, leveraging expertise and know-how from analogue and digital TV, interactive web applications and mobile telephony.
LA7’s plans for the future are firmly based on the core values that will enable it to grow, and will continue to set the channel apart in Italy as a unique purveyor of creativity, quality and originality, run as a profitable business.
