Virgilio (Telecom Italia Media Group) is the winner of the 2004 Sole 24 ORE “Premio WWW” prize for the best “News and Portal” site. Picked by Web surfers and a jury of Net professionals, Virgilio took first prize after beating four finalists: Google, La Repubblica, http://www.kitchens.it/ and http://www.oroscopofree.com/. Initially launched in 1998 by the financial daily newspaper, the competition was created to encourage creativity and functionality among Italian-language web sites, and has become the yardstick for Italian web sites and Web surfers.

“It is a great honour to win the Sole 24 ORE ‘Premio WWW’. Since its inception, the Award has been a major stamp of quality for Internet sites,” says Giancarlo Vergori, Head of Marketing and Sales at Virgilio. “This award is an acknowledgement of our success in making innovative choices, and for the provision of high-quality and exhaustive content.”

Every month over 14 million browsers visit Virgilio, the most complete Italian-language Web portal. Winning this award for the best news and portal site can only increase the popularity of the brand. The new-look Virgilio stands out from other traditional general portals and offers users a greater degree of interactivity and more complete search options for information, as well as access to tailor-made services.

Italy’s leading portal, Virgilio is acknowledged to be the country’s most exhaustive and authoritative homegrown tool for finding out what’s hot and what’s cool on Italian web sites, and the best sites around the world. Special features, recommendations and Web guides are organized into theme-based channels so that Italian-speaking users can find their way to all of the most popular and groundbreaking web destinations. Online since 1996, Virgilio is a Telecom Italia Media Group product. http://www.virgilio.it/
