SONY, TIM and KIMBO WINNERS

The first “Virgilio Spot Awards” ceremony was held today at the Ventaglio Caffè in Milan, where prizes were handed out to the three 2003 TV commercials that received the highest number of votes from visitors who took part in the Virgilio cinema channel competition.

The Sony Playstation “Mountain” advert won first prize with more than 4000 votes. TIM’s “TV nel telefonino” advert took second prize with 2600 votes, while Kimbo’s “A me me piace” garnered almost 1900 votes to take third prize. The winning companies and the agencies responsible for creating the campaigns were presented with their awards by Platinette and Fabio Valente, Head of Media Sales at Virgilio Advertising.

Launched in mid-December 2003, the “Virgilio Spot Awards” competition (now closed, though the page is still up at http://spotawards.spettacolo.virgilio.it/), gave site visitors the opportunity to vote for their favourite TV commercials out of 15 in competition. Voters also entered a prize draw for a trip to the Caribbean. The other 12 adverts were by Rimmel, American Express, Mazda, Enel distribuzione, Lottomatica, Sony Ericsson, Merloni, Grana Padano; Sprite and Bacardi Freezer both had two adverts in competition.

Almost 230,000 visitors viewed the competition site; more than 19,000 cast a vote. The adverts were viewed a total of 156,000 times. More and more people are using Virgilio with advanced access technology: over 15% of visitors chose to view the adverts over an ADSL connection, even though an average of 9% of Italian households are equipped with ADSL (source: A.C. Nielsen C.R.A.).

The success of this initiative proves that online advertising is undergoing an evolution into new multimedia formats, as television commercials begin to be broadcast over the Internet.
