The ASST (Azienda di Stato per i Servizi Telefonici) company, responsible for managing the country’s long distance and international network, rapidly developed the radio relay system in Italy in the Fifties and Sixties. The radio link between Monte Cavo (Rome) and Monte Serpeddì (Cagliari), spanning 380 Km of open sea, was one of its biggest construction projects. In 1973, Italy’s first terrestrial radio telephony network was built. The precursor to modern day cellphone systems was known as the RTMI (Radio Telefono Mobile Italiano – Italian Mobile Radio Telephone).
