Telecom Italia Group innovation is generated by ongoing research and development activities about emerging technologies.

The video interview for the company profile of Mario Di Mauro, Director of Strategy & Innovation, focuses on the challenges of the industry and the search for new models of innovation

Telecom Italia Lab is the Group's Research Centre working to ensure its tradition of technological innovation started 50 years ago in Turin by CSELT, the Reaserch Centre and Laboratories for Telecommunications.

TILab's mission: pilots technological innovation, new technology scouting, surveys, feasibility assessments and research into prototypes.

Areas of operation, also in collaboration with Telecom Italia's areas of innovation: fixed-line and mobile access network design and development, transmission network upgrades, service and platform development, next-generation terminal design and testing.

Key numbers:

  • more than 3,000 patents filed. Considering the ammount of patens filed in the mobile category, Telecom Italia is Telco number 1^ in Europe and 5^ world wide
  • over 12,000 m2 of laboratories based in Turin, Rome, Trento, Naples and Milan
  • 50 research contracts with universities, on average there are over 80 researchers involved every year – either as teaching staff or other. The universities and research institutes partnered with TILab are based mainly in Europe but also in USA and Japan.

 

Besides TILab, the Joint Open Lab (JOL) are a new project to strengthen the Group's research activities.  JOLs are research and innovation laboratories set up within university centre, as a result of partnerships and agreements between Telecom Italia and major Italian universities in specific fields of scientific and technological interest. Today 5 universities are part of the nework in the cities of Catania, Pisa, Milan, Turin and Trento, with the involvement of 350 young peolple, including 200 working in Telecom Italia's areas of innovation.

 

Furthermore Telecom Italia’s Future Centre hosts higher education services, as well as specialized laboratories, and  international cross-field project teams, also in cooperation with prestigious universities such as the Ca' Foscari University of Venice. The Centre, based in the sixteenth-century convent of San Salvador in Venice, is a fascinating venue for events, conferences and events at both local, national and international level.
